Civic Center Prepares for Rush Hockey
Ice Making Officially Underway
RAPID CITY, SD – September 19, 2019) – Beginning on Tuesday staff began cooling the Ice Arena to reach an ambient temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit and a floor temperature of just 16 degrees Fahrenheit in preparation for ice making.
Starting today a team of four Rushmore Plaza Civic Center employees will begin misting layers of white paint on top of a razor-thin layer of foundational ice.
The ice installation process, takes roughly 36 hours, involves repeated misting of paint, even water dispersion, graphic placement and hand-painted blue lines and goal creases. Upon completion the crew will have used over 300 gallons of white paint and over 12,500 gallons of water creating a sheet of ice that is 1 ¼ inch thick.
The Rapid City Rush home opener is slated for October 25th when they take on the Utah Grizzlies.
